+--------------- 49ers Keep Garrison Hearst ---------------+

SANTA CLARA, CA - The San Francisco 49ers announced they had signed Pro Bowl running back Garrison Hearst to a six-year contract.  After missing two full seasons due to a broken ankle which required six operations, Hearst returned in 2001 and rushed for 1,206 yards and caught 41 passes for 347 yards.

Hearst, 31, had indicated his preference to return to the 49ers, who stuck by him throughout the two-year ordeal, although he was courted by the Atlanta Falcons. He played his college ball at Georgia.

The 49ers, who finished 13-3 last season and made the playoffs for the first time since 1998, have retained three of their four key unrestricted free agents -- Hearst, fullback Fred Beasle and center Jeremy Newberry. But safety Lance Schulters appears to be headed elsewhere. He visited with Tennessee and Atlanta this week.

A first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 1993, Hearst played three years in Arizona and earned his first comeback player award in 1995 when he rushed for 1,070 yards in 1995 after missing eight games the previous season due to a knee injury.

+------------ Raiders Name Callahan Head Coach ------------+

OAKLAND, CA - The Oakland Raiders ended their search for Jon Gruden's successor, promoting offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to head coach -- a post he never has held during a 22-year career.

The announcement was made in a one-paragraph posting on the Raiders' web site. Callahan was introduced at a news confer-ence at the team's Alameda, Calif., practice facility.

Like Gruden, his former boss, Callahan has no head coaching experience and moves up after serving as an offensive coordinator, a position he held with the Raiders the
previous four seasons.

Callahan, 45, followed Gruden to Oakland after serving as offensive line coach with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1995-97. He spent his previous 15 seasons in the college
ranks, working as offensive line coach at Wisconsin from 1990-94 after one season as offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois.

His hiring comes three weeks after Gruden left the Raiders with a year left on his contract to become coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden received a five-year, $17.5 million contract while Oakland received first- and second-round draft picks this year, a 2003 first-round pick, a 2004 second-round pick and $8 million in cash.

+-------------- Terry Glenn Traded To Packers -------------+

GREEN BAY, WI - Disgruntled wide receiver Terry Glenn has found a new home with the Green Bay Packers.  The New England Patriots received a fourth-round pick in the 2002 draft and a conditional pick in 2003 for Glenn.

It will be a much-needed fresh start for Glenn, who was suspended on three separate occasions last season and kicked off the team by coach Bill Belichick in the playoffs.
But Glenn opted to just focus on his new team and his new quarterback.

The trade had been rumored for weeks and apparently came to fruition when Glenn reduced his contract demands with Green Bay. Seeking to recapture lost wages from 2001, Glenn reportedly was seeking a $7 million bonus.  As part of the deal, Glenn dropped a series of grievances and the Patriots will gain at least $2.4 million in salary cap relief.

The Packers have been in the market for a receiver since they expect to lose Bill Schroeder and Corey Bradford to free agency.

Glenn was suspended for the first four games of the 2001 season after violating the league's substance abuse policy.  He also was suspended for a game against the New York Jets on Dec. 2 and later suspended from the Patriots' postseason run to a Super Bowl triumph.

+------------ Dolphins Trade For Ricky Williams -----------+

MIAMI, FL - The Miami Dolphins acquired running back Ricky Williams from the New Orleans Saints for a first-round pick in 2002 and a third-round pick in 2003 that can escalate to a first-rounder based on performance clauses.  The teams also swapped their fourth-round selections in 2002 as part of the deal.

The Saints surrendered all of their draft picks in 1999 and a first-rounder in 2000 to Washington for the right to select the Heisman Trophy winner from Texas with the fifth
overall pick. That deal was orchestrated by former Saints coach Mike Ditka, who was fired after the 1999 season.

The Dolphins just had to part with the 25th overall pick in the 2002 draft and a third-rounder in 2003 that can turn into another first-rounder, contingent on Williams'
performance this season.

After missing eight games due to injuries in his first two seasons, Williams rushed for a career-high 1,245 yards in 2001 and caught 60 passes for 511 yards.  But he is
considered somewhat of an eccentric and was arrested last month for driving 126 miles per hour.

That did not stop the Dolphins, who ranked 23rd in the league in rushing, from making an offer to New Orleans for the 24-year-old Williams.

The presence of running back Deuce McCallister, a first-round pick in 2001 who averaged 5.7 yards per carry in limited work, also made Williams expendable.

Williams immediately becomes the feature back for Miami, which will not re-sign free agent Lamar Smith, who averaged less than three yards per carry last season after a breakout 2000 campaign.

+--------------- Kreutz Re-Signs With Bears ---------------+

LAKE FOREST, IL - Heavily pursued by the Miami Dolphins, Pro Bowl center Olin Kreutz has decided to stay with the Chicago Bears.

Kreutz agreed to terms with the Bears on a six-year contract, two days after the Dolphins made him a lucrative offer.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Kreutz reportedly received a six-year contract worth $23 million, including a $7 million signing bonus.

Kreutz, 24, was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time this past season, anchoring a line that yielded a league-low 17 sacks and helped rookie Anthony Thomas rush for 1,183
yards.

A third-round pick in 1998, Kreutz took the starting center job away from Casey Wiegmann in 1999 and started 39 games over the last three seasons.

+-------------- Bills Sign Veteran Tight End --------------+

ORCHARD PARK, NY - After nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, tight end Dave Moore has found a new home with the Buffalo Bills.

Moore, an unrestricted free agent who had the best season of his career in 2001, signed a contract with the Bills that could end the Buffalo tenure of incumbent tight end
Jay Riemersma.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Moore appeared in Tampa Bay's last 119 games and had made 65 straight starts. He caught a career-high 35 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns and is the only NFL tight end with three or more TD catches each of the last three seasons.

It is believed that new Bucs Coach Jon Gruden wanted to retain Moore, but the 32-year-old instead decided to head north where he will join two former teammates at the
University of Pittsburgh -- quarterback Alex Van Pelt and guard Ruben Brown.

+------------ Patriots On Another Bargain Binge -----------+

FOXBORO, MA - After bargain shopping their way to a Super Bowl title, the New England Patriots are at it again, signing free agent receiver Donald Hayes.

Hayes had 118 catches over the past two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Terms were not disclosed, but Hayes reportedly received a two-year deal worth about $3.5 million.

Those figures would be in line with the bargains New England landed last season when it signed running back Antowain Smith, fullback Marc Edwards, receiver David Patten,
linebackers Roman Phifer, Mike Vrabel and Bryan Cox, guard Mike Compton and defensive backs Terrell Buckley and Terrance Shaw.

The Patriots are hoping that philosophy works again. Rather than pay big money to the likes of Az-Zahir Hakim, who signed a five-year, $16 million deal with Detroit, Cris
Carter or Michael Westbrook, New England instead pursued Hayes and Joe Jurevicius, the New York Giants' third receiver.

Patriots Coach Bill Belichick was seeking a physical receiver to complement Pro Bowler Troy Brown and opted for the 6-4, 218-pound Hayes over Jurevicius.

In New England, Hayes will provide quarterback Tom Brady with a big target over the middle. The speedy Patten, who caught a touchdown in the Super Bowl XXXVI win over St. Louis, likely will move to the role of third receiver.

+----------- Cowboys Sign Glover For Five Years -----------+

IRVING, TX - The Dallas Cowboys, seeking a pass-rushing defensive tackle, landed the best one available on the free agent market, signing La'Roi Glover to a five-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN reported that Glover received $22.5 million with a signing bonus of $6 million.

Glover was waived by the New Orleans Saints for salary cap purposes, but the Cowboys are more than $10 million under the cap and were able to put together a lucrative deal.

Glover, 27, had a breakout year with 17 sacks in 2000 for the Saints. Although that total was more than halved last year, his eight sacks would have led the Cowboys. Dallas
managed just 24 sacks last season as defensive end Greg Ellis led the team with six. In Glover's five seasons in New Orleans, his lowest sack total was 6 1/2 in 1997.

Dallas' top starting defensive tackle, Michael Myers, is an unrestricted free agent, and the other starter, Brandon Noble, is a restricted free agent. Both improved against the
run last season as the Cowboys ranked 13th in the league, but were unable to collapse the pocket.

The 6-2, 285-pound Glover will provide that interior pass rush Dallas needs and should ease the pressure on ends Ellis and Ebenezer Ekuban.

Along with adding Glover, the Cowboys have re-signed safety Darren Woodson to a five-year, $20 million contract, handed a six-year, $37 million extension to Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen, and signed free agent tight end-long snapper Jeff Robinson.

+-------------- Chiefs Sign Linebacker Cadrez -------------+

KANSAS CITY, MO - The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms on a one-year contract with linebacker Glenn Cadrez.

Cadrez joined the Chiefs last season after spending six years with the Denver Broncos. He played all 16 games, starting five, and recorded 39 tackles, intercepted one pass and had a fumble recovery. He also had a blocked punt and 1 1/2 sacks.

The 6-3, 240-pound Cadrez has 330 tackles, 14 1/2 sacks, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and three interceptions in 155 career games. The 32-year-old was
selected in the sixth round of the 1992 draft by the New York Jets and spent three seasons with them before joining the Broncos in 1995.

His best year was 1998 when he made 15 starts for Denver and registered a career-high 105 tackles with four sacks. During his tenure with the Broncos, Cadrez played in nine
postseason games and won a pair of Super Bowl rings.
