Tony Stewart
Top Ten
WINSTON CUP

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Superstitious Tony Stewart doesn't like the color green or the number 13. He won't even spend the night in a hotel room whose digits add up to 13. Somehow, though, he had to manage his 13th victory. He couldn't skip the number 13 in that area.

Naturally, in a way that only a superstitious racer could appreciate, the 13th victory came at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he had never finished better than ninth.

"Finally," Stewart said, "it's been a long time coming."

Joe Gibbs' two-car Pontiac team has won six times at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but the previous five came from Stewart's teammate, 2000 Winston Cup champion Bobby Labonte, who struggled on Sunday.

"Bobby's always had real good luck here," said Stewart. "I'm sorry he didn't have a very good day (37th), but I'm just really proud of the guys on my team."

A notoriously slow starter, Stewart's victories have occurred earlier in each of his four seasons as a Winston Cup driver. As a rookie in 1999, he won for the first time in September. In 2000, he won in June, and in 2001, the season's first
victory came in May.

Already considered a contender for the championship, Stewart's victory in the season's fourth race leaves him in fifth place in the season standings, three weeks after he left Daytona in 43rd place.

On Sunday, Stewart held off another slow starter, Dale Earnhardt Jr., to win the MBNA America 500 by about six car lengths.

Although an earlier race was unofficial, it was the second time this year Stewart has outdueled Earnhardt, and in the aftermath of the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona on Feb. 10, Junior said almost the same things he said on Sunday:

When he tried to make a run on Stewart, Stewart intuitively understood that riding in front of Earnhardt's car diminished its performance aerodynamically.

FEUD OF THE WEEK

Tony Stewart vs. Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Stewart has now bested Earnhardt twice this season, once officially in Sunday's MBNA America 500 and once unofficially in the Budweiser Shootout, a race named for Earnhardt's primary sponsor.

NASCAR This Week's Monte Dutton gives his opinion: "This is a friendly rivalry. The two young drivers enjoy racing each other. They often draft together at the restrictor-plate tracks. Earnhardt would really like to even the score, and the way their cars are running, there should be plenty of
opportunities this season."
