++------ ASK THE PRO ------++

Q: At the top of my backswing I have noticed that my left hand is cupped to the inside and not straight like the pros on TV. Doesn't this action promote a slice, and how do you fix this problem? -- Frank W. from the Web

A: Yes, it sure can. Take a comb or tongue depressor or something similar and tape it to the back of you left hand (right if your left-handed) so you can't cup it at the top. Hit about 20 balls a day for a couple of days to get the feel. That should do it.

FAIRWAY DRIVER PUTS LONG HOLES IN REACH

If you think it's too risky to hit your long-shafted, low- ofted driver off the ground, most of the time you're cor- rect. But under the appropriate conditions, the driver off the deck can be your ticket to lower scores on long holes that are normally 20 to 50 yards out of your reach. Of course, no matter how badly you want to go for it, if there is any trouble on the straight line between you and your target, just say no and lay up. However, if it's open in front of you, so a rolling ball can't hurt you, the con- ditions are right to give it a go with the big stick. Figure it this way: If you challenge the hole and win, you're either greenside or putting on your next shot. If you catch your shot thin or top it, the roll you'll get will put you in about the same position as a good lay-up shot. Even if you hit it fat, you're still in a position to make a long iron recovery shot. To hit your driver off the ground, start by positioning the ball about 1 inch back of your front heel to facilitate making contact at the bottom of your swing arc. Then aim your club face at the target, and align your body so it points about 35 degrees to the left of the target line (right for left- handers). It's a good idea to pick out a guide, like a bunker or tree, to aim your body at. Your only thought during your swing is to hit the ball squarely, and let your address geometry take care of the ball flight. If you swing your club down your shoulder line (not the tar- get line), you'll hit a low, hot fade that starts to the left and bends back to target.

EQUIPMENT

SHALLOW FACE IS BEST ON FAIRWAY WOODS

The center of gravity of your club head influences both the trajectory and distance of your golf shot. Its positioning in the club face is controlled by the form and shape of the club head, and by the weight distribution of the club head.
It's best that your club head has a low center of gravity because this allows you to get the ball into the air with minimum effort. Also with a low center of gravity, the shot will feel more solid when you make contact directly on the sweet spot. If the center of gravity of the club head is above that of the ball at impact, you'll produce a low shot that has trouble getting airborne. For example, deep-faced drivers (long from top to bottom) have a high center of gravity, so it's hard to hit them off the fairway. This is why you don't see many deep-faced 3- and 5-woods. It's OK when you tee the ball up to have a club head with a lot of vertical rise, but you want a shallow face construction for your fairway woods. The same goes for the utility clubs. You want small heads with the rails on the bottom of the sole plate so the bottom of the club doesn't catch in the grass.
