The Hybrid Delemma
Pick up a seed catalog, any catalog that does not cater exclusively to those who prefer open-pollinated "heirloom" varieties, and flip through the pages. Seldom will you go more than a page or two before you encounter a "hybrid" variety of vegetable or flower. How can you tell? Such plant varieties will be labeled clearly as such, with the word hybrid, or the designation "F1." So if you are a gardener who has become convinced that hybrid varieties are somehow harmful, you have no excuses - these seeds are easily avoided. But should they be? What is it about a hybrid variety that has so many gardeners looking down their noses? For that matter, what the heck is a hybrid variety, anyway? >>CONTINUED>>

PLANTING CLEMATIS This popular climber's needs seem to be contradictory: The roots prefer cool, moist soil in a shaded environment while the foliage and flowers need full sun.To achieve these conditions, Plant the roots in the shade of a nearby shrub, or use a thick layer of lightweight mulch. Provide a trellis, or plant them where they can climb into an existing shrub. Clematis will add summer blooms to spring-blooming shrubs such as lilacs and forsythia. For more information about growing clematis see: http://www.gardenguides.com/flowers/perinnials/clematis.htm ------------------------------------------------------------

GROUNDCOVERS Fill in bare spots in your perennial groundcovers with transplants from fuller areas. Before the plants flower, use a sharp blade to dig up the clumps, then divide them into individual plants and replant. The remaining plants will spread to fill the holes. Keep the transplants well watered until they take hold. When choosing a groundcover, don't settle for something that's merely a bland space filler? Dragon's Blood creeping sedum will quickly cover your beds and borders with a dense, 3-8-inch tall carpet of succulent leaves. In late summer, its bright-red flowers become the main attraction. Then, when the bloom ends in fall, the needle-like leaves turn a distinctive orange-red and keep their color all winter. Sedum Clearance: http://www.gardenguides.com/sedem.htm
