JERRY SPRINGER
TV talk show host Jerry Springer may soon be back in politics.
Ohio Democratic Party officials confirm they've spoken with
the former Cincinnati mayor about running against Republican
Senator Mike DeWine next year. But Hamilton County Democratic
Party Chairman Tim Burke admits to the Cincinnati Post that he
doesn't expect Springer to walk away from his popular TV show.
No comment from Springer. The man who's been blamed for helping
to drag talk shows down into the muck was a Cincinnati City
Council member in 1971 when vice squad officers discovered him
with a prostitute in Kentucky. He resigned his city council seat,
but ran again and was re-elected. He remained on the city council
until the mid-1980s...when he he ran unsuccessfully in Ohio's
Democratic gubernatorial primary, losing to Richard Celeste. He
subsequently left politics and became a television news anchor.

JAMES CAGNEY
Actor James Cagney is being honored with a U-S postage stamp.
It's the fifth in the Postal Service's "Legends of Hollywood"
stamp series. Others in the series include Alfred Hitchcock,
Humphrey Bogart, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. More than
75-million Cagney stamps are being printed...and they'll
unveiled tomorrow at a ceremony in Burbank, California, that's
expected to be attended by Cagney's daughter, Casey Thomas.
The stamps will go on sale nationwide Friday.

DARLENE GILLESPIE
A former Mouseketeer has lost her bid to stay out of jail while
she appeals her fraud conviction. Darlene Gillespie has been
ordered to surrender next Monday to begin serving a two-year
federal prison sentence. She asked the judge to delay prison
 - pending appeal - but the motion was denied. The 57-year-old
Gillespie was convicted of helping then-boyfriend Jerry
Fraschilla in a scheme that involved writing bad checks to buy
stock in 1992 and '93. The 61-year-old Fraschilla was sentenced
to 18 months behind bars. Gillespie was one of the nine original
Mouseketeers on "The Mickey Mouse Club Show" from 1955 to 1959.

NIELSEN RATINGS
NBC took top billing in last week's Nielsen television ratings
race as the Peacock network placed three of its prime-time
shows in the top 10. Nielsen says FOX's Tuesday night broadcast
of baseball's "All-Star Game" was the top-ranked show for TV
viewers during the week that ended July 18th. The network's
"All-Star Pre-Game Show" came in second. CBS's "60 Minutes"
placed third...followed by ABC's "20/20 Sunday" and its "20/20
Wednesday." ABC's "20/20 Friday" took the number-six slot. NBC's
"Dateline Sunday" came in seventh...followed by the network's
"Will and Grace," CBS's "Everybody Loves Raymond" and NBC's
"Frasier."
