TOO MUCH, EVEN FOR OZZY
Heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne has, famously, bitten the head off
a bat and snorted a line of ants off the ground but according to a report
in the New York Post, the thought of getting close to Russell Yates was
more than even Ozzy
could stand. The Post reports that the upcoming issue of Blender magazine
will carry the story of Osbourne's close encounter with the father of five
children who were killed at their Texas home by Andrea Yates, who is serving
a life sentence for the crime. Blender writer Adrian Deevoy -- tailing
Osbourne for the magazine piece -- went with him to a "Today" show taping
at which Osbourne met Russell Yates in the green room. According to Deevoy,
Yates said he was a big fan of Ozzy's -- even sang some Black Sabbath tunes
-- and angled to get his picture taken with Osbourne. When Osbourne and
his wife Sharon were told that Yates wanted a photo -- according to the
newspaper
account -- they were repulsed. "I will burn his eyes out with a hot
poker," Ozzy was quoted. "He is profiting directly from the demise of his
own children. And that, to me, is wrong." The Osbournes and Deevoy ducked
out the door before Yates could get a picture with them.

TOUCH CHOICE?
According to a report on ABCNews.com, a New York mom might have to
choose between enjoying her right to smoke in the privacy of her home or
her car and being a parent to her son. A judge last week ordered Johnita
DeMatteo to stop smoking at home and in the car, or lose visitation rights
with her 13-year-old son, Nicholas. The boy allegedly complained last summer
to his dad and his lawyer that he didn't want to visit his mother's home
because the place smelled of cigarette smoke. DeMatteo told "Good Morning
America" she'll do what she has to do to keep seeing her son, but she thinks
the order is an unfair intrusion into her personal life. "The point is,
I don't smoke when my son is in the house, and I don't smoke in my car
when my son is in the car," she said. Nicholas' lawyer, William Koslosky,
said this is ultimately a health issue. State Supreme Court Justice Robert
Julian agreed, citing studies on the dangers of secondhand smoke when he
ruled that DeMatteo's smoking was not in the best interest of her son and
his long-term health.

MICHAEL'S FUTURE?
Washington Wizards coach Doug Collins said Wednesday that this could
be Michael Jordan's last year as a player in the NBA -- really. "I'd be
surprised next year if he did play," said Collins in an appearance on "Pardon
the Interruption," a sports-talk show on ESPN. "I don't know," he said.
"I just think the wear and tear ... I'm not saying he's not going to play.
I am saying right now I think that's up in the air. I think he's going
to make a decision. We'll sit down and talk after the season." Collins
said the team is in a different situation than it was in last year, when
they didn't know until after the draft whether Jordan would play in the
2001-02 season. "This year, (Jordan) said we'll know what he's going to
do before the draft," said Collins, "so we can move forward on what we
have to do." Collins said that even if Jordan does play next season, there
is no assurance he'll be able to make it through a full 82-game season.
"Michael's got great pride," said the coach. "He does not want to come
back next year and be injured and go through the season where he's on the
injured list." Jordan had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Feb. 27.
He missed 13 games before returning to action March 20.
